Next month Jamie Carragher will hang up his boots with more than 730 professional appearances for Liverpool.
In a career spanning more than 16 years at the club, Jamie Carragher would in a different era have been the Liverpool captain. He has of course fulfilled that duty on numerous occasions - as stand in for Gerrard.
He was appointed vice-captain 10 years ago, when Gerrard took over the captaincy from Sami Hyypia.
But with Carra leaving - just who will replace him as the new VC?
We look at the candidates.
1. Lucas Leiva
Liverpool's Brazilian number 21 is now 26 years of age - roughly the same age Carragher was when he became Vice Captain. He has been at the club for 6 years already and is one of the first names written down on the team sheet.
When Benitez brought him to Anfield he highlighted the fact that even at his then tender age he had been a captain of both former club Gremio and the Brazilian youth side.
Some may not seem him as a potential leader on the pitch - but his consistency in play and determination to win back possession gives him plenty of positive qualities.

2. Pepe Reina
Pepe is one of the central characters of the dressing room. His past 18 months have seen some inconsistency in his football and there are many rumours that he could be leaving Anfield this summer.
He commands his defence well and nobody wears their hearts on their sleeve during victory more than Pepe.
Even at 31, we think that if he stays he will be a great choice as Liverpool's Vice-Captain.

3. Jordan Henderson
Henderson has captained many of the England youth sides, often to very good effect. Wearing the captain's armband has elevated many of his performances for the international sides.
After a difficult opening season, spent mostly on the right wing, his form has improved dramatically this season. The arrival of Joe Allen has spurred him on to try and recapture a starting place in the side. The goals have even begun to flow as his maturity increases.
He has experience of leadership at U21 level - and with Liverpool adopting a strategy of a younger squad - he could be the right hand man Gerrard needs in looking after his peers.
OUR VIEW: OUTSIDE CHANCE
4. Luis Suarez
Liverpool's number one player is another who may not be here next season. Fingers crossed, Liverpool show enough determination in the transfer window so that he can give the club another season.
He also has experience of being Captain - most recently at Ajax. He went on to win Dutch Footballer of the Year that season so it clearly doesn't hamper his performances.
Suarez however courts controversy and in the modern days of football PR - he may not be acceptable to the clubs media-wary owners to wear the armband week in week out if Gerrard is absent.
OUR VIEW: DON'T BET YOUR HOUSE
5. Daniel Agger
Will the mantle pass to another defender?
Daniel Agger has been the first choice centre-back for Liverpool this season. He will have been at Anfield for 7 and a half years this summer. The injury problems that plagued his career (and threatened his retirement) appear to be behind him.
He isn't afraid of dishing out verbal lashings to fellow players - and nobody can remember his comments and treatment of Torres when the player moved from Chelsea to Liverpool.
Agger commands respect from all in the dressing room and we think he could be a serious contender to get the nod this summer.
