REDS: ONE WEEK TO SHOW STADIUM MONEY
Liverpool City Council have granted Liverpool a 999 year lease for the area of Stanley Park at today's council meeting looking at Liverpool's new stadium.
The plans for the new stadium have been approved and the reds could move in as early as the 2009 season.
Rafael Benitez was one of the first to comment:
"It's very good news and it's important for us to have a stadium with a lot of possibilities for our supporters," enthused Liverpool manager Benitez.
"We have the best supporters in the world and if we can have 60,000 of them in for every game at Anfield it would be better."
But Liverpool only have a week to show the council that they can provide the right funding package for the new stadium.
That will enable councillors to start work on pumping £15 million of European and Taxpayers money in to the regeneration.
Cllr Flo Clucas said: "The stadium is regarded by our European colleagues as absolutely vital. Without it, there will be no European funding.
"That has been said loudly and clearly to the club.
"If the club does not come forward with its funding, this regeneration project does not exist.
"We are waiting for them to say what they will do, because everything else is in place.
"They will need to come forward with their funding in the next week so reports can be ready for the committee. If they do that, we will be in a position to proceed."
The clock is ticking.
