RAFA AND SPURS: THE FIGHT IS ON

The feud between Rafa and Tottenham chairman was intensified over the last 12 hours, when Spurs chief Daniel Levy contacted the Premier League to investigate.

Asked after the Everton game about Daniel Levy's strong denials that Cisse had been targeted Rafa said this:

"The Tottenham chairman is not professional. I am professional.

"Who has started talking about Cisse?" said Benitez, making reference to an interview Levy made in the Daily Express on Feb 1. "The problem is I have a good memory and he cannot remember when he talks with the agents about these things. He talks with the agents and after he cannot remember. But I remember because I am professional and he isn't."

After this it is believed Spurs contacted the Premier League.

Earlier in the day Tottenham manager Martin Jol said:

Why should I have my players upset in this manner? It is unbelievable. It is bad enough when agents talk and spread rumours, but this was totally unnecessary coming from a club,' said Jol.

"It was 'ludicrous' and untrue that Spurs wanted to offload Defoe", added Jol. 'Jermain has done wonderfully well. He has scored and made a lot of important goals for us. I have three strikers and they have scored 30 goals between them and that for me is the important statistic."

"And no disrespect to Cissé, he is a good second striker, but we don't need this type of player now, end of story."

Liverpool chief executive today tried to pour water on the flames that are igniting on Radio 5 Sportsweek.

“We are in dialogue with Spurs, and it is an episode we want to put behind us and move on,” Parry said.

“I am sure we will do that. They are making the point they are not interested in our player, and we are not interested in their player – so I think we’ll resolve that one.”
