GERRARD DEMANDS CASH

Steven Gerrard has urged the Liverpool board to back Rafael Benítez with significant transfer funds in the summer to ensure the Spanish manager remains on Merseyside despite ominous interest from Real Madrid and Internazionale in his services.

Benítez reiterated his desire to enter the market at the end of the season to add to his squad following the surrender of the Merseyside club's European Cup last Wednesday. That has put more pressure on the Liverpool board and the chief executive Rick Parry in particular to find further investment and bolster the funds at the manager's disposal.

"He is a fantastic coach and I have full confidence he'll stay here and continue to do a good job and, if the people upstairs back him with the little bit of money he is after, then I'm sure he can take us even higher and make us even better," said the Liverpool captain Gerrard.

"The manager is asking for more money to strengthen the team and the squad and we are not that many players away from being a really good side. So I'm sure we will make a few good signings in the summer and we will be even stronger."
