REDS DOUBLE UP ON PENNANT DEAL

Jermaine Pennant: Right wing problem solved?

Liverpool have moved quickly in attempting to sign Jermaine Pennant from relegated Birmingham City.

The reds initially offered £3 million to the Midlands side in late June, increasing the bid to £3.5 million. Both bids were rejected.

With the Alves deal effectively ended after Sevilla slapped a £12 million price tag on the player the reds are believed to have offered a deal in the region of £4 million up front with a further £2 million based on player appearances and performance. The player has expressed his desire to leave Birmingham City for Liverpool, leaving the manager Steve Bruce in a vulnerable position.

Liverpool and Rafa Benitez have long been looking for a solution to bring a genuine right sided winger to Anfield as Benitez begins to mould his side in the shape of his Valencia who played attacking football utilising wide players.

The player is believed to be on his way to Anfield for further talks and a possible medical tomorrow and Thursday.
