Lennart Johansson, the UEFA president, has offered renewed hope to Liverpool in their campaign to be readmitted to the Champions League next season if they beat AC Milan in the final on May 25.

Liverpool's hopes of qualifying through their Premiership position were extinguished at the weekend when Everton clinched fourth place.

However, Johansson has urged the Football Association to appeal for a fifth English representative should Rafael Benitez's side win in Istanbul.

"If the English Association think it is right they should request a fifth place in the competition," Johansson said. He intends to draw up legislation which would ensure the holders will be able to defend the trophy, though this would come to late to help Liverpool.
