RAFA REFUSED TO PAY FOR OWEN Rafael Benitez refused to pay £17 million for Michael Owen, who left the club last season, with a year left on his contract for £8 million. Benitez, clearly a man not to forget about Owen's year of 'will I won't I' sign, simply decided that £17 million was too much for a striker, albeit a good one, when the club has 5 already on its books. Owen left Liverpool for Real Madrid to 'win trophies'. How ironic it is that in the 12 month's since he departed Liverpool are now the European Champions. Real Madrid won nothing, and he has joined Newcastle United. Don't start building a new trophy cabinet at home Michael.
