The Premier League title race will be decided on the final day of the season thanks to a late winner from substitute Divock Origi, assisted by substitute Xherdan Shaqiri.
The reds endured a difficult evening - this game coming less than 72 hours after the reds suffered in the Nou Camp against Barcelona.
With Roberto Firmino missing, and Naby Keita injured - the reds had to continue with changes to the side. Dejan Lovren's inclusion did not help the reds whilst Daniel Sturridge offered little as a replacement for Firmino.
Mo Salah was stretchered off the pitch with the scores at 2-2 after a collision with the Newcastle keeper.
But in the final minutes of normal time, Shaqiri whipped in the inswinging cross and Origi got a touch to bounce it off the defenders head and into the net.
Another league victory for the reds, a return to the top of the table and 94 points on the board.
Man City suffered a defeat here back in January, but Liverpool came through the Benitez test to take all three points.
Double equalisers
Liverpool got off to a good start and it was big Virgil van Dijk, newly crowned PFA Player of the Year who headed the reds into a lead in the 13th minute.
He was allowed space inside the area to head in from a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner.
As it happened: Newcastle 2-3 LFC
But minutes later Dejan Lovren unnecessarily created some havoc in the reds defence. Liverpool cleared to the half-way line but Newcastle were back in and Salomon Rondon fired his shot at the goal. Alexander-Arnold on the touchline handled the ball but Atsu followed up and fired in.
But Liverpool hit back relatively soon after. This time Mo Salah scoring his 22nd Premier League goal. He touched in from a great Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery.
Second half
The reds started the second half brightly but Newcastle had another equaliser in them. Liverpool failed to clear a corner and Rondon smashed in on the 54 minute mark.
2-2 and Liverpool were to suffer more bad news.
Mo Salah was hit by Dubravka after a long hospital ball up field from Lovren. He required extensive attention on the pitch before being stretchered on.
Divock Origi came on and with 4 minutes of normal time remaining the reds earned a soft free-kick.
Alexander-Arnold stood over it but van Dijk urged Shaqiri to take an in-swinger instead.
He did just that and Origi got the faintest of touches on it, before it bounced off the defenders head and into the goal.
Liverpool 3-2 ahead in the final minutes.
The full time whistle blew and the reds moved on to 94 points and returned to the top of the Premier League. But City face Leicester on Monday where they can all but cement the league title.
Liverpool have the little matter of trying to prepare for a second semi-final v Barcelona.
