Liverpool followed up the 4-0 victory over Arsenal by getting hammered by a worse scoreline in this weekend's first fixture at the Etihad stadium.
Despite looking like the better side for the opening 20 minutes, Liverpool failed to take their chances and it was Sergio Aguero who capitalised on the reds defensive weaknesses to open the scoring.
In the 38th minute Sadio Mane was sent off and Liverpool effectively threw in the towel. Man City had a disallowed goal and a legal goal within the 8 minutes of added time after the sending off.
Team News
There were three changes from the team that beat Arsenal 4-0. Simon Mignolet came back in for Loris Karius, Ragnar Klavan replaced Dejan Lovren and Alexander-Arnold replaced Joe Gomez.
Gomez and Lovren were both replaced, as Klopp said, because they were not as sharp in training - with both players being heavily involved in two games over the course of the international weekend.
The reds started well - Mo Salah seeing plenty of the ball with Otamendi picking up an early yellow card. He had the pick of the chances to score - finding himself on a one on one but with a weak shot at Ederson Moraes.
At the other end de Bruyne and Jesus both saw chances sent wide.
Alexander Arnold had a poor half - handing City a corner from a poor backpass to Mignolet - caught out of position and collecting a yellow card for pulling de Bruyne's shirt.
Eventually the break through came and it was for City. de Bruyne with space in the middle sent a through ball goalwards and Aguero peeled off the back of Klavan to fire past Mignolet.
In the 38th minute Sadio Mane chased down a ball with his foot high, and out came the City keeper. The two players clashed and Sadio was shown the red card. The City keeper was eventually stretchered off, although he appeared in the dug out at the end of the game suggesting no serious injury.
In the 8 minutes of injury time the reds failed to adapt and Gabriel Jesus first had a header ruled out offside before making it officially 2-0 a minute later.
In the second half the reds threw in the towel. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came on for Mohammed Salah to try and add some defensive reinforcements.
But it didn't help. Jesus added another, before substitute Leroy Sane managed to add a further two goals.
Substitutions were made aimed at looking ahead to Wednesday's Champions League clash against Sevilla, and with Liverpool at times appearing to played like a friendly.
It was the reds joint heaviest defeat in the Premier League - matching the 5 goal difference when Stoke won 6-1 at the Britannia in May 2015.
