Liverpool had to settle for a draw against United who mounted a rearguard action at Anfield.
The reds had a couple of chances to win the game but not enough of them in a second consecutive 0-0 against Man United at home.
With Mane out injured following the international break - Philippe Coutinho once again moved forward into the front three - allowing Wijanldum to regain his place in the side. Joe Gomez started at right back.
Ultimately however the game will likely be most remembered as the first with the renamed Kenny Dalglish stand at Anfield.
And so to the game - and Liverpool settled quickly as the dominant side - United deciding to operate on a policy of containment despite having scored 22 goals in their opening 7 games. But this was their first test against a team inside the top 10 of the league. Anders Herrara tasked with the man marking job on Coutinho.
Liverpool's clear cut moment of the game arrived from a reds corner. Joel Matip firing in a reaction shot that David de Gea stopped with an outstretched boot. When the ball bounced back into the area, Mo Salah fired wide. He had reacted quickest to collect the ball but may have been better leaving it to Coutinho who was loitering behind him.
The reds midfield did do a better job of protecting the back line than in recent weeks (it was only the reds 3rd clean sheet in 13 games) and the likes of Mkhitaryan and Lukaku were bystanders for most of the game. When Lukaku did get a sighter at goal himself he drilled it straight at Mignolet who had very little to do for the rest of the 90 minutes.
Liverpool had another glorious chance in the second half when Joe Gomez lifted a beautiful cross into the area. Emre Can had broken through the defence but he got too much boot on the ball and steered it over. A scuff off the shin would have likely sent it past de Gea on that occasion.
As it happened: LFC 1-1 Man Utd
Lovren headed over late on and there was a shot fired at the side-netting but for the second successive occasion this big Premier League clash has failed to live up to its billing.
The reds were certainly not as effervescent as they were against Arsenal at home, but they were much better drilled than against the likes of Man City.
In isolation a draw at home to the team who are top is no bad result - Liverpool's significant disappointments have come on the road at Watford and Newcastle.
The reds move up to 6th, while United move clear to top of the Premier League. Next up for the reds is a visit to Slovenia in the Champions League where 3 points there are set to be vital.
