LFC 2-1 QPR: Gerrard misses penalty then scores late winner

Steven Gerrard missed a penalty before making amends by scoring a late winner as the reds got back to winning ways.

The reds have endured a miserable time of late, a disappointing draw at West Brom and a midweek defeat at Hull ending hopes of a top four finish.  Before that defeat against Aston Villa ended any hopes of something a little bit better - silverware and condemned Brendan Rodgers to being the first LFC manager in over half a century to go 3 years without winning a single trophy.

Before kick off a plane flew across Anfield declaring 'Rodgers out Rafa in'.  Although a recently created twitter account claimed to be behind this - no long-standing LFC group appears to have had anything to do with this banner - which ironically may shore up support for the Liverpool manager.

This has been a poor season from Liverpool and Rodgers - and sadly also for Steven Gerrard who has one of the worst win records of any player in the Liverpool team this season.  It was a nice moment therefore for him to get the winner - although his failure from the spot caused gasps amongst the Anfield crowd.

Steven Gerrard had been rested midweek but returned today to captain the side.  Up front there was a rare start for Rickie Lambert in place of the injured, and poor, Mario Balotelli.  Lambert looked confident and despite an initial onslaught from QPR it was he who found Phil Coutinho who fired in the opening goal in the 19th minute.

After the half time break the reds should have disappeared into the distance.  Lallana missed a great chance before Jordan Henderson flighted a magnificent ball into Raheem Sterling.  From about 8 yards the man who believes he is worth more than £100k a week missed the kind of chance that a non-league footballer would be kicking themselves over.  In recent weeks Sterling's form has dipped so poorly that the biggest question now appears to be what were Liverpool thinking offering him such a large contract.

Sterling is increasingly looking like the kind of player who either thinks he has made it already, or has been found out by the opposition.  The reds may well be praying for a large enough transfer offer coming in this summer to maximise the players worth.

With 15 minutes to go the reds were made to pay for those missed chances.

A Joey Barton corner found Leroy Fer who fired past Mignolet.

The reds were thrown a lifeline when Onuoha fouled Martin Skrtel in the box - but Gerrard's penalty was weak and Robert Green saved.  Moments later Onuoha received his marching orders - sent off for bringing down Jordon Ibe.

With 3 minutes left however, Gerrard rose to meet a Phil Coutinho and headed in to give the reds all three points.

Another below par Liverpool performance but the points were scraped against a team heading out of the Premier League.

Three more games left of the season.
