Nine man Liverpool were brushed aside in a game that saw the reds start poorly, and finish even worse.
Skrtel picks up a second yellow and is sent off
On the back of last week’s unlucky defeat against Stoke, the reds travelled to another of their bogey grounds – White Hart Lane – but this time deserved to leave with nil point.
Spurs raced out of the blocks, keen to secure their first home win of the season after their pummelling by Manchester City recently. Some slack marking from Liverpool saw Luka Modric with time and space at the edge of the box in the 7th minute and he lashed in an unstoppable strike to put the hosts ahead.
Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll combined to put the ball in the Spurs net – but the goal was disallowed due to offside.
Daniel Agger was forced off with a rib injury, sustained during the Modric goal – and Sebastian Coates was thrown on for his LFC debut in the 27th minute.
A minute later and the reds fate got worse. Charlie Adam managed to collect his second yellow card in the 28th minute, which saw the reds reduced to 10 men.
Ironically, the reds improved slightly at this point, although Spurs were still dominating possession.
Gareth Bale continued to cause stand in right back Martin Skrtel problems, with Jordan Henderson failing to offer Skrtel any kind of helpful assistance.
In the 55th minute the reds remote chance of an equaliser disintegrated when Skrtel also picked up his second yellow card and received his marching orders. A positive 11 man Spurs team were now taking on a morale-defunct 9 man Liverpool side.
Spurs managed to add three further goals during this spell, one even coming from a mistake from the usually reliable Pepe Reina.
Luis Suarez and Stewart Downing were both substituted off – to keep them fresher for the next battle.
Liverpool’s White Hart Lane misery continues, Spurs move to within one point of the reds who are now 8th.
