Liverpool will face Arsenal at Anfield in the next round of the League Cup after a much changed side defeated MK Dons away.
Jurgen Klopp named 3 debutants in the starting line up, changing all 11 of his outfield players from the weekend victory away at Chelsea.
A potential banana skin, the reds scored a goal in each half to win their first League Cup match for 3 years with a goal from James Milner and a second half debut goal for Ki-Jana Hoever.
Line up
Caoimihn Kelleher, Ki-Jana Hoever, Lovren, Gomez, Milner, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Rhian Brewster.
Subs: Andy Lonergan, Adam Lewis, Herbie Kane, Pedro Chirivella, Sepp Van den Berg, Luis Longstaff, Leighton Clarkson.
Goal before half time
It was an entertaining opening to this midweek league cup clash and with Liverpool changes this looked a far more even game than it would have been against the reds' normal first team.
Caoimihn Kelleher was handed his debut in goal, allowing a rest for reserve keeper Adrian, and he was slightly caught out of position early on but MK's McGrandles fired over from well inside the area.
At the other end a cross took a deflection into the path of Harvey Elliott, the 16 year old summer arrival, but he fired at the bar from 5 yards.
Eventually stand-in left back Milner made the breakthrough - a powerful drilled drive from the left corner of the area flummoxed the keeper who couldn't make the save and his save was weaker than the shot - end result being a goal.
Jordan Bowery hit the post in the second half for Dons, whilst late on Harvey Elliott crashed another shot against the crossbar.
But the Liverpool second goal, the decisive goal, was sandwiched between these attempts.
James Milner at the heart of it again - his inch perfect cross was met by the on-rushing Ki-Jana Hoever who powerfully headed in his first goal for Liverpool.
Curtis Jones was named Man of the Match for an excellent all round performance and is clearly one to continue to watch.
The reds get a welcome result in this competition and a place in the last 16 - although the next round tie against Arsenal is no easy option.
