Liverpool 2-1 Man Utd

Liverpool knocked Man Utd out of the FA Cup to seal a great week of cup football for the reds.

The reds players looked tired after the midweek exertions but Dalglish made a couple of changes.  Andy Carroll started up front, with Bellamy moving to the bench.  Rodriguez came back in to the side to replace Dirk Kuyt, and Jamie Carragher took over the holding midfield role from Charlie Adam.

It was Rodriguez who went closest first, forcing a save from De Gea.

Valencia struck the post for United, but this fired the reds on and in the 21st minute a Steven Gerrard corner found Daniel Agger who headed in to the net.

United then had a period of sustained possession in midfield, with Paul Scholes orchestrating things from the base of midfield.  However, United’s possession wasn’t threatening until a rare mistake from Jose Enrique allowed Rafael to fire in the cross for Park to equalise.

The second half was a more sterile affair with few chances of note for either team, with a game played predominantly in the middle of the pitch.

Dalglish made all three substitutions, replacing tired players including Steven Gerrard, and with it the reds found an extra yard across the pitch.  Carroll sent a ball through to Dirk Kuyt who with 2 minutes left smashed in the winner.

Moments later he had the chance to make it 3, Carroll’s header rebounding off the crossbar but Kuyt’s toe-poke sent the ball agonisingly wide.

The reds closed out the game with comfort and head in to the 5th round of the FA Cup at the expense of their biggest rivals.
