Pre Season Friendly
Sunday 19th July @ 6.15pm, Ernst Happel Stadium
Liverpool will sign off their European training camp with a game against Austrian side Rapid Vienna before heading to Thailand for the continuation of their pre-season campaign.
The reds drew their first game of pre-season 0-0 against FC St Gallen of Switzerland.
Rapid Vienna were due to start their league campaign this weekend but they have put their game back to allow them to play Liverpool, so like St Gallen, our opponents should be at a more advanced stage of fitness than the reds.
Like Liverpool, the club finished runners up in their domestic league – and because of the interest this game is being played at Austria’s national stadium which has a capacity double that of Rapid Vienna’s home ground.
History
Liverpool have only played Rapid Vienna once before – a friendly at Anfield in 1933 after Liverpool were looking to fill a gap after being knocked out of the FA Cup in the early rounds.
The reds ran out 5-2 winners in the game.
Liverpool fans are more likely to remember Rapid Vienna for allowing Everton to win their only European trophy – the 1985 European Cup Winners Cup in which the blues won 3-1.
