In May 1965 Liverpool, who days before had won the FA Cup for ths first time, faced Inter Milan in the European Cup semi-final.
But Shankly’s dreams of seeing Liverpool in a European Cup final were ruined in the second leg.

Aged 13, straight after school we went to Anfield on the bus, just got into the kop. No tickets and kids prices. What a week, cup-final on Saturday, town hall on Sunday for welcome home, followed by euopean semi-final on Wednesday. A happy night but followed by a dark Wednesday one week later in Milan.
I now have a 13 year old, who I would not allow to get up to the advantages we did, life has moved on.
Undoubtedly the greatest of all the European nights at Anfield. These video clips cannot convey the intensity of the atmosphere. The Kop was full at 5 oclock. When the F.A. Cup appeared just before the kick off I hought my eardrums were going to explode. When Inter came out they made towards the Kop but turned around after a few seconds! When that great reds team came out the reception for the first men ever to bring the F.A Cup to Anfield was incredible. Inter were the world club champions yet we swarmed all over them from the start. I have often wondered what those Inter players, experienced as they must have been, thought of the game.
Every man in that great Liverpool side was a hero and they’ll never be equalled for committment and endeavour.
Thanks for some brilliant memories. I was fifteen and just been to the Cup Final. It was double Christmas. The shots of the Kop moving up and down make me wonder why you took it for granted at the time. A lot of that match was spent with my feet off the ground just being carried by the crush where it wanted us to go. I remember crying with happiness when we beat Arsenal 5-0 to win the league in 1964 and that night was just as emotional. Just have a look at the players Inter had and you’ll appreciate what a genius Shankly was to produce such a fantastic team.
I can only imagine the pain all red fans must of felt after that.My ahrl fella used to tell me all abar it.It would of been brilliant if Shanks would of got the double that year. The ref actually admitted he took a bribe of Inter to a undercover reporter
Like Paul I was at the match, but in the kop, I think the kop gates where shut about 1 hour before the match started. I dont know how many where in the kop that night, but it was a lot, you could not move. It was hot in there and I remember the kop singing “jailer bring me water”.
What a great night it was, the atmosphere was just wild, nothing has never come up to it.
Its just a great pity when we played over there, we had to play Inter and the ref, 12 v 11 we where never going to win.
Its hard to beleave we have never played them since.
I will be in the kop again, and we will do it this time.
I was at the game in the old tin roof Annyr oad end.
After the fa cup win on the sat. it was so exciting as a kid (13) to be watchin my home town team in the european cup semi final and it brings it all back to me seeing the video. It was a great night in our history and but for the ref we would have got to the final and won it instead of Inter Milan. Lets hope we can beat them this time and get to the final again
Stunning game had only ever read about it. Shankly was a genius with the FA Cup pity we cant do it now in semi finals. Can you even imagine about how more unbelievable the atmosphere against chelsea 05 would have been if we had had the FA Cup paraded around Anfield beforehand! Great post.
