The Shrewsbury Town Assistant Boss was given the nod by Rafa Benitez and is excited by the prospect of joining the club. During his playing career he was briefly with Everton – although his career largely spanned non-league clubs in Merseyside and the North West.
He was youth team coach at Tranmere for 8 years and twice had to step in to the caretaker managers job there.
For the past three years he has been assistant boss at Shrewsbury.
John said:
“If any Premier League club comes knocking at your door it is something that you have to consider and with it being Liverpool it was a job that I couldn’t refuse.
“To work with a manager of the quality of Rafa Benitez and an assistant manager like Sammy Lee is brilliant and it’s a place where I can continue to learn and develop as a coach and hopefully give them something back.”
“Despite missing out on promotion to League One, McMahon leaves Shrewsbury on good terms.
“Ultimately I would have liked to have left the club with them being promoted but it wasn’t the case.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time with Shrewsbury and the chairman, manager, the staff, players and spectators have been fantastic to me.”
Liverpool are going through an enormous number of changes behind the scenes at Anfield this summer and we expect a lot more new faces to be arriving for the backroom team over the coming few weeks.
