The ‘Anfield Iron’ suffers heart attack

One of Liverpool’s most famous stars from yesteryear is recovering a Merseyside hospital following a heart attack yesterday.

Tommy Smith, known as the ‘Anfield Iron’ collapsed at his home in Crosby whilst lawnmowering his garden. The 62 year old was rushed to University Hospital Aintree in Liverpool where he is expected to spend the next few days recovering.

The former player and now columnist of the local Liverpool Echo newspaper had been feeling unwell for days prior to the attack, but had passed it off as indigestion.

Tommy Smith joined Liverpool as a  15 year old working with the ground staff. Four years later he played his first senior game for Liverpool. 13 years later, in his 600th game, he scored the second goal in the European Cup Final in 1977 and became the first Liverpool captain to hoist old big ears above his head.
