So Liverpool have (well almost certainly) made that Champions League spot. 4th place in the Premiership has been a struggle. In retrospect Arsenal have been superb, and Chelsea have bought their way to the upper echelons, Man United have been poor. Coming 4th is one thing, behind so far behind, losing 10 matches out of 37 is another. This season has been shockingly bad, the only thing more shocking than us is how rubbish all the other Premier league sides have been. We said we would give Gerard Houllier till the end of the season before we decided on his tenure, and to be completely honest, I think I am still going to sit on the fence. It is all too hard separating the man, who I probably quite like, to the man who seems to be unable to consistently improve the club and has bought some terrible players. Whether he stays or goes, a new season will kick off in August, and all Liverpool fans will wipe the slate clean for the red cause. If, and it looks pretty certain, Gerard Houllier is there next season, he knows it IS his make or break year. Especially if the reds have finances to bring some big name players in to the squad. However what I would like to see from Houllier is for him to cut some of his flops from the squad. All too often it seems he has stuck with certain players, almost out of arrogance to admit he was wrong. In my opinion Heskey, Diao, Cheyrou, Hadji Diouf and Smicer can all go - big wage earners who are unlikely ever to truly aspire to the 'Liverpool standard'. Although the reds may purchase some promising youngsters, the likes of Joey Barton, they also need to purchase some proven exciting, determined and hard-working world class players. If Steven Gerrard doesn't get a single man of the match for us next season, then we will be flying! |
