R-editorial: 4th September 2004

So here we are three games in to the season, and with a win, a draw and a defeat to our name.

Last week’s game at Bolton was far from satisfactory, and it followed another poor display at home to Austrain Champions Graz AK.

But on the whole I still believe the reds are progressing. Gerrard, Alonso and Hamann are three quality central midfielders who are pushing for two places in the side.

Luis Garcia looks more than capable of providing Kewell and Smicer with reasons to fear for their places, and Josemi also looks like a decent committed full back. Carragher has made the transition back to central defence brilliantly and has been our most promising player so far this season.

So what do we want – victories, and more importantly goals from Djibril Cisse and Milan Baros, perhaps the only two players at Anfield without any challenge. The departure of Michael Owen was certainly a blow for the club in terms of quality strikers, but if a player is not fully commited then it is foolish to keep them playing at our club.

Owen will need to be replaced however and we have no doubt that Benitez will do this in the January transfer window, especially if somehow the reds are still in the Champions League. Fernando Morientes was wanted, and he would have been a superb addition to the club.

Some idiots booed the players after that Graz match – absolutely idiots. Liverpool had qualified for the Champions League and we should all know that these matches are two leg affairs. Some people expect instant success, but the more knowledgable reds out there know that this takes time. New players, new languages all need time to bed in. One thing remains absolutely resolute in my mind however – come Christmas our club will be beginning to play the kind of exciting football many of us have not witnessed in the recent five years.
