Liverpool progressed through to the last 16 of the League Cup despite a valiant second half performance from the home side.

The reds welcomed back club captain Steven Gerrard in the second half, after a 6 month absence, as the reds were deserved victors at Premier League chasing Brighton.
Liverpool raced in to the lead in the 7th minute with a well taken goal from Craig Bellamy, making his first full start for the reds since his return on transfer deadline day.
The reds dominated the first half, and could have scored 4 or 5. Bellamy again was involved when his free kick smashed the cross bar. Luis Suarez had a couple of great chances, denied twice by the woodwork.
In the final moments of the first half though Brighton could have earned themselves an equaliser against the run of play. Sebastian Coates and Jamie Carragher failing to deal with a Brighton move – only for Martin Kelly to clear just in front of the goal line.
The reds defence had a poor night overall. The returning Martin Kelly and Jack Robinson both failing to seize their chance to stake a claim for the team. Sebastian Coates also looks like he may need a little more time to adjust to the more frenetic pace of English football.
Liverpool’s domination in the first half however was tempered by a very poor first half. We failed to have anywhere near the number of gilt edged chances that had arrived in the first.
The reds eventually brought on Steven Gerrard, and he was given a warm welcome not just by the reds travelling support but the appreciative home fans.
Dirk Kuyt was looking lethargic and failed to control the ball on a number of occasions. The reds did eventually double their lead with 10 minutes remaining, ironically Kuyt grabbing the goal with a shot that creeped in to the corner of the goal. His celebration reminded us all on the recent birth of his new baby – judging by his performance he is being kept up with many late nights.
The reds survived a late scare when Brighton scored a late penalty. But the reds saw the game out and advanced to within 3 games of the final at Wembley.
The draw for the 4th Round is on Saturday, before the reds take on Wolves at Anfield.
Bellemay who offers pace should start more often then not in place of the unimpressive Carroll!. Considering all our first half chances we should have put the game to bed but for the poor finishing.
Great to see Steven Gerrard back.
