Liverpool’s 26 year old midfielder Alberto Aquilani is still enjoying the resurgence in his career at Juventus and once again has urged his loan club to shell out the cash to make the deal permanent. The summer loan to the Italian club saw the insertion of a €16M (£13.5M) buy-out clause.
With new owners at the helm assessing the value of Liverpool’s squad, and with the player not in the current manager’s plans, Liverpool would be willing to tie up a deal in January . The club would be prepared to reduce the fee if a deal can be done in the early period of the transfer window.
Aquilani, who topped the Premier League’s goal assist charts for the second half of last season, has been rejuvenated in Italy since overcoming the ankle injury that restricted him to just 18 Premier League appearances last season.
“I hope to convince the directors of Juventus to buy me from Liverpool. At Juve I would like to open a new era with the team.
“Sixteen million euros is a lot, but they can negotiate.
“Juve was a huge opportunity for me, I could not lose it. Leaving Italy was not easy, I faced many life changes.”
Aquilani was also asked a tongue-in-cheek question about which player from Anfield he would bring to the Stadio Olimpico.
“What former Liverpool team-mate would I bring to Juventus? I wouldn’t want to offend some of my friends, but from Liverpool I would take Glen Johnson.”
A note on Aquilani at LFC
Despite the media criticism of Aquilani his Liverpool performances from last season stand up very well.
Although only the 14th most used player over the season he provided the 2nd highest number of assists after Gerrard, and provided them far more often. Aquilani (a goal or assist every 146 mins played) – Gerrard (a goal or assist every 162 mins). When you consider that Gerrard was the reds penalty taker, plus nearly always played in front of Alberto it is clear that Liverpool may have made a mistake loaning out Aquilani and paying £4.5M for Poulsen.
Hodgson will sell him then spend the many on more defenders and holding midfielders as if we’re not negative enough.
am one of the best lfc fans in the world i love aquilani and he is the best player bcoz we need him more we have some one but we still need him he is nt for sale pls pls dnt sele him i love gerred
italian players dont do well here out there comfort zone its really debatable if he would been an eventual success in the EPL. not many english players lasted long there if u check history. But perhaps the cash will come in handy for the transfer kitty piling up
get him out, he was average at best and id rather pay money for a player who was fit from the very start, we need to move on fresh start and so does he, he was so hungry to move back to his home land, do you all really think he cares to mich about liverpool, come on! he jumped ship the minute that a club wanted back in his home land! yes he could be good and has clearly got some talent but for me id rather have the 13.1 million which is the agreed fee the purslow did with jve for a perm deal.
You’re all deluded. Aquilani was one of the worst ever purchases in the premier league. How many Italian player have made it in the prem ? He’s playing well now because he’ back playing slow Italian football where you have plenty of time on the ball. Sell him ASAP, and sell a load of dead weights like poulson, babel, Jov etc and use the 60 million from NES + 25 million in sales to replace mascherano and Alonso Hypia and buy a decent centre forward as back up.
I remember when Aquilani scored with Intajes women thats how it started…
I agree with Phil above^^. Please step down Roy. Give someone else a go.
I’m sorry but this is the final straw. Roy, your a gent, but please step down. We’re going backwards. (see Roly above) We need a gaffer with ambition, flair and a willingness to go forward. we’re sitting back. If this carries on I really fear that we will lose nando and maybe even stevie YNWA
This is pretty unbeleivable – buy a player when he is crook for a reported £20M, nurse him better, loan him out and bring in complete rubbish, and then sell him for half price. At the moment, and even towards the end of last season Aquilani was better than Maxi, he is now better than Cole, Merellies, Maxi and Poulson (comedy signing of this season). Have we got money like this to throw away, I think not.
I am absolutely sick this is happening. This has to be Roy Hodgson’s WORST EVER decision. Great idea to sell one of your best players and replace him with inferior ones!!!
Alberto is just what we are missing right now, he would be dictating the play and helping us push up the pitch, rather than sitting back waiting to concede.
Bad move Roy!!
the reason why there is no room in the current squad for aquilani is because he is not strong enough defensively, I certainly did not question his ability going forward. The question is not between Aquilani and Poulson but between Aquilani and Stevie G and Raul Meireles, in the manager’s eyes he ranked behind both Stevie and Meireles.
We are still looking for a suitable replacement for Masha as both Loucas/Poulson have come up short. Hodson has been linked to a couple of young promising players
Good analysis it’s true
I don’t understand why we let him out on loan, when he played he looked good at lot better than every other midfielder bar stevie, he was the creative force that we missed last season, if it was my call I’d have him back & bin Mr Poulsen for sure YNWA
Totally agree we should have preserved with Aquilani, just needed to play long minutes and lots of games, he would have been a very good player…
Hey, Aquaman, 16 million euro is too little so if there is to be some negotiating lets hope it is to raise the number and not lower!
