Reds will not be hit with 9 points penalty

The Premier League have confirmed that Liverpool’s situation, if the owners go in to administration, will be more like West Ham’s than Portsmouth’s off field events.

West Ham, like Liverpool were a solvent organisation when their owners went in to administration – avoiding the penalty, whereas Portsmouth were insolvent and handed a 9 point penalty.

The clarification from the Premier League says:

“The aim of the regulations is primarily to capture clubs who have gone into insolvency. This is manifestly not the case with Liverpool Football Club.”

Earlier today the club announced their intention to sell the club on to the New England Sports Venture group (NESV), a move which could see Tom Hicks and George Gillett lose out on approximately £100-£150M of their Cayman-Island based loans, whilst seeing the clubs loan with RBS wiped.

According to several journalists, the entire Liverpool football team is fully behind the boards move to remove the present owners.

The owners could still engage in a legal dispute with the existing board, but the matter would be unlikely to be resolved in 10 days – in which case RBS will assume control of Liverpool FC and then more than likely sell it on to the NESV group.

  1. why dont they punish hicks and gillet they are trying to bankrupt our club. look at man utd got bigger debt than ours .

  2. Umm, it may not matter because LFC have NOT gone into Administration…at least yet. So hold off on your b*tchitude.

  3. The holding company has the 150M debt not Liverpool, LFC is solvent, it is the holding company that will go into administration, with LFC being an asset that will be sold. The Board did well to protect LFC in this way, but its a lesson to be learned that once you own a club, you can do pretty much what you like!

    • Rupert Lowe did the same to protect Southampton. The football club was a subsidiary of Southampton leisure holdings. But the appeal was over-ruled.

  4. You cannot be solvent and in administration at the same time. If any team goes into Administration they should and will be hit with a points deduction.

Liverpool fans will take it personally that they are treated favourably but they ruddy well are! The Premiership needs big teams, otherwise there is no brand to sell.

    Think about it.

  5. this is typical of the premier league punish a team that needed help and look after the top teams not that liverpool are.

this is a total joke and the prem league is corrupt and looking after who they want.

good riddance of the prem league pup

    joke

      • DISGRACEFUL

debts of £150m to be wiped out, more than Portsmouth, yet no penalty? How on earth can that be acceptable? Portsmouth were punished for being insolvent – the suggestion is that Liverpool is not insilvent so why would they need to steal the £150 million from their creditors?

You pay your debts or you get punished surely???????

  6. one rule for one another rule for the rest . administration is still a point deduction, if it were any other club than Liverpool then the point would go into effect. I hope the other clubs that are effected with administration will sue the premier league for miss justice.

      • No, West ham meet the same “Big Club” Criteria thats why. Portsmouth, Southampton, bournemouth, Leeds… Shall i continue? Rules are Rules and FIFA should start pulling strings to make the PL and FA play by them. Its a disgrace. Sorry, i do follow Liverpool, but think this is wrong.

  7. As soon as LFC is taken out of these 2 Yank’s hands the better for all. Look forward to the day the club is in the hands of decent owners away from moneyu making spivs like Hicks and Gillete.

    • Totally agree, But everyone should play by same rule book, so sell the club, but due the £150m debt being written off, Liver[pool cant pay the bill so either cough up or go into administration as insolvent, whats the difference? take the 9 points now, with nearly a whole season to make them back and it becomes fair

      • Portsmouth were served a winding-up order by the taxman. The owner took the club in to administration – it is a pretty different situation when Liverpool are effectively sold, and only a court case could take them in to a swiftly concluded administration.

But in any case, Liverpool fans would happily take 9 points to get rid of Hicks and Gillett.

If we have to we will. No problem. May concentrate the minds of a players.

Although Premier League rules don’t mention admin, they say insolvency.
