Liverpool council suggest New Anfield starts April

According to the leader of Liverpool City Council, Evertonian Warren Bradley, Liverpool Football Club aim to begin work on the new stadium in April.

The leader of the local council is due to meet with Everton to discuss a new Everton stadium in the next fortnight and it is believed that the possibility of Everton utilising Stanley Park was to be debated.

However, in response to this – the council leader said that Liverpool Football Club had told him that they hoped to complete ‘financing’ for the stadium by the end of March 2010.

He said:

“Liverpool FC’s Christian Purslow has told us that the club in the first quarter of next year should be able to move forward with the stadium.

“We have told them it’s time to move on now, it’s gone on too long.

“I honestly believe Christian Purslow has been open and honest with us. Hopefully in the first quarter of next year we will see some movement. Without doubt it’s not before time.”

Both owners promised to begin work on the stadium immediately when they took over the club almost 3 years ago, but Stanley Park still lies empty.

Personally – we won’t believe it until we see it – but the fact that the council have some prime development area that could be of interest to Everton Football Club should be enough to ensure Liverpool finally get that work underway.

However an LFC spokesman today said:

“Construction of the stadium will begin when the current contraction in the banking industry ends and the global financial markets re-establish their equilibrium.”

Hmm…
