For 3 weeks in January the eyes of the African football continent will be on the 2010 African Nations Cup, a competition that will deplete Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea of some of their key players.
Our Stevie believes that this mid-season tournament could provide Liverpool with an opportunity to capitalise.
Speaking to the official club website Gerrard said:
“Everyone will have blips and some of the teams lose important players with the African Nations.
“It’s a long season, there are a lot of games and a lot football to be played yet.
“Chelsea, Tottenham and City have got off to good starts but there is a long way to go before you start predicting who will be up there at the end.”
Chelsea will possibly be the team most affected, with Drogba, Essien and Obi Mikel amongst four players expected to participate in the tournament in Angola.
if we do not add players with quality like van der vaart or even a back up prem striker then liverpool do not have the quality to keep up in both the leaque and european cup. you have to just look at the players that chelsea have on the bench,,, its not even close the two squads do not compare., it hurts to say that but it is clear
I still think we need to re-enforce during the January transfer window.
With the league been our priority i think we need to look at players whi are cup tied in Europe as well as those who are not.
Perhaps having a look at the clubs already out of europe might be the answer. VDV and the likes should be brought in for the final push.
Let’s see where we are in may, table position before that means s***e.
I am already taking flak from Chelsea fans about how well they have started and how we have lost 2 games already. Like Rafa says, you win nothing in September. Last season we would have drawn 3 by now and lost none, by my reckoning thats the same points dropped. No need to panic, and the signs are there that we are moving in the right direction. Lets see where we are in December!
