Southampton 0-2 LFC: As it happened

Liverpool travel to Southampton this afternoon looking to complete their 3rd Premier League double of the season.

With a host of ex-Southampton players amongst the Liverpool ranks, not to mention the acquisition 5 weeks ago of £75M Virgil van Dijk, there is no doubt likely to be a febrile atmosphere at St Mary's Stadium.

And this will not be helped by the fact that Southampton themselves are just one place outside the relegation zone.

But for Liverpool the eyes are all focused on the top four of the Premier League table.  Spurs leapfrogged the reds yesterday but it is up to Liverpool to make that a temporary state of affairs.  A draw would be enough to put the reds back in 3rd, but three points would be more valuable to maintain a weekend gap over Chelsea.

Wonder what kind of game this fella is going to have today?

Recent games v Southampton

Our recent form against Southampton hasn't been great.  Although we won the Premier League fixture 3-0 at Anfield in November, we had a torrid time in the 5 games before that.

A 0-0 home league draw last May. And last January, Southampton beat us 1-0 in both of the League Cup semi final legs to deny the reds a trip to Wembley.

And in the 2016 calendar year the reds had two Premier League games at St Mary's, drawing 0-0 in one, and losing 3-2 in the other.

Liverpool's last Premier League victory at St Mary's stadium was 3 years ago in the 2014-15 season.

Southampton into the relegation zone

They're warming up on the pitch and they won't like this news. Newcastle have just beaten Manchester United 1-0,and that means Newcastle jump out of the relegation zone.

Southampton fall down to 18th place. Kick off in 20 minutes.

KICK OFF

Southampton get the game underway!

Come on you reds!

16:34 UK

2' Firmino finds Trent Alexander Arnold who is powering down the right hand side at some pace.

He finds Salah, who tries to go the long way around the Southampton defence before the ball is put out for a Liverpool corner.

The reds corner is cleared by Southampton's £20M striker Guido Carrillo.

GOAL

6' From a corner kick to Southampton the reds race up the other end of the pitch.  Karius gets rid of the ball quickly, it makes it's way to Salah.

He slides it across to the centre of the penalty area and there is Roberto Firmino to fire in his 20th goal of the season with ease.

1-0 to Liverpool

16:48 UK

16' Ball sent into Salah inside the area but he is judged to have controlled it with his arm by the penalty spot and Southampton get the free kick.

Saints working to get themselves back in this game - they're trying to play balls to beat Liverpool's offside trap.

And there's a great chance for Southampton - but Karius smothers Hojbjerg's attempt.  Well read by the Liverpool keeper.

16:52 UK

Firmino's opening goal

16:58 UK
Firmino penalty appeal waved away

25' Saints defender had his arms wrapped around Firmino's neck in the area, but unlike last week's soft Spurs penalty decisions, there is no penalty here for Liverpool.

And moments later he is fouled outside the area and yet again doesn't get the referee's decision.

Mane also with a chance for Liverpool - his shot from outside the area goes wide of the right hand side of the goal.

17:00 UK

29' Great cross deep in to the penalty area by Southampton.  Guido Carrillo's head meets it sweetly but it's down low at the feet of Karius.

And seconds later a cross from the left hand side and Ward-Prowse heads it - Karius tips it over.

17:05 UK

34' Liverpool want to end this decent spell from Southampton and left back Andy Robertson drills a pass across the face of goal but there isn't a Liverpool player there to make the important contact.

10 minutes until half time.

17:09 UK

37' It's a yellow card for Joel Matip for dragging an opponent to the ground.

17:13 UK
GOAL

42' It's against the run of play, but who cares.  A 1-2 between Salah and Firmino.  Firmino backheels it into the area and Salah is there to score his... 29th goal of the season (his 22nd Premier League goal).

Liverpool with a 2-0 lead now.

17:18 UK
HALF TIME

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Salah assist Firmino goal.

Firmino assist Salah goal.

It has not been vintage from Liverpool but as well as the credit to our excellent twosome up front - Karius has done well when called upon.

It's looking good so far.

17:32 UK
SECOND HALF

We're back underway, Liverpool this time with the kick off.

Much has been made of how many points Liverpool have given away from winning positions this season.  That scenario must be avoided in this half.

17:35 UK
Early booking

47' Emre Can, no stranger to the referee's book, goes into Martin Atkinson's book for a foul.  From the resultant free kick he heads the ball away inside the Liverpool area.

17:39 UK
Chance

50' Firmino on the left hand wing crosses the ball in.  Sadio Mane goes for an acrobatic in the air kick but it rebounds off Mario Lamina to the feet of Mo Salah.  He can't guide his shot goalbound.

17:45 UK
Southampton make the first sub

Tricky position now for Southampton. They're 2-0 down and every time they go to make an attack they're faced with a Liverpool counter attack.  The likes of Robertson and Mane breaking at some speed.

They've made a substitution.

Off goes Mario Lemina and on comes Sofiane Boufal

17:47 UK
Liverpool substitution

59' Dangerous free kick for Southampton.  Ward Prowse whips it in to the near post from a wide position but Hoedt gets way too much boot on the ball and sends it out for a Liverpool goal kick.

Liverpool substitution

Off goes Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, possibly the only ex-Saints player to receive decent applause, and on comes James Milner.

17:58 UK

70' Approaching the final 20 minutes and you feel that Klopp would like to make a few more subs now ahead of the Porto Champions League game.

But 2-0 isn't yet comfortable enough for Liverpool.  And Salah had a chance there to make it 3-0 and wrap up this game.  He drills his shot wide after Firmino had already put the keeper on the floor with his first shot.

James Ward Prowse off for Southampton - they've brought Shane Long on.

18:02 UK
Shots blocked

74' Breakaway from Liverpool - Sadio Mane pulls the trigger - shot blocked, it comes to Andy Robertson - his left footed shot blocked.

Time is running out for the home side here.

18:06 UK
Sub

79' It's boo time at St Mary's stadium.  Adam Lallana comes on for Roberto Firmino.

18:16 UK
Klopp trolling?

89' Dejan Lovren comes on for Mo Salah.

Liverpool are about to go back into 3rd position.

18:23 UK
FULL TIME

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Thoroughly professional win for Liverpool and we are now back in 3rd, with just a two point gap to Mourinho's Man Utd.

18:33 UK

Virgil van Dijk:  It was a very important win for us today in the race for the Champions League game.  I really enjoyed today a lot.  I focussed on the game.  I enjoyed being back.  There were a lot of good memories here.   Unfortunately they're not in a very good position right now but for Liverpool it was a very good win.

Mo Salah:  I'm always focussed on helping the team.  Obviously when you score it feels good but we still have league games and Champions League games and we have to carry on.

18:34 UK

Thanks for joining our live match updates.

A few days off and then it's the last 16 of the Champions League!
