LIVE: Huddersfield 0-3 Liverpool – As it happened

Liverpool can move 5 points ahead of 5th placed Spurs, who we face this coming weekend, with a win tonight against Huddersfield.

Klopp and his players will be hoping to banish the demons of two consecutive defeats, away at Swansea in the league, and at home in the FA Cup 4th round v West Brom.

Both coaches are close friends off the pitch but that must be put on hold for 90 minutes tonight as David Wagner and Jurgen Klopp face off for the second time this season.

Liverpool beat Huddersfield 3-0 at Anfield earlier this season, and are looking for only their second Premier League 'double' of the campaign to date.

Huddersfield have gone six games without a win though and are in even worse form than the reds.

As it happened...

Reds need a result

It's Huddersfield tonight - with Liverpool travelling to the 14th placed Premier League side.

Liverpool saw their 18 game unbeaten run ended eight days ago - losing away at Swansea.  And then the weekend saw the club dumped out of the FA Cup by Alan Pardew's West Brom.

Huddersfield have just two points in their last 5 league games - losing the last three.

But the Yorkshire club did beat Manchester United 2-1 here.

19:00 UK
David Wagner says,

The Huddersfield coach senses an opportunity...

"Liverpool have lost two games in a row. They look vulnerable at the minute.

"Does it mean we will be successful? No. Does it mean we have a chance? Absolutely.

"We have in every game, especially here at the John Smith's Stadium, and if there's a chance we will be there to grab it with both hands."

Confirmed LFC team

Six changes for the Liverpool side - with Jordan Henderson amongst those returning to the starting line up

Karius, Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Robertson, Can, Henderson, Milner, Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Subs: Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ings, Solanke.

Defender Terence Kongolo, on loan defender from Monaco, makes his Premier League debut tonight for our opponents.

A win tonight puts Liverpool on to 50 points and will put us 5 points ahead of Spurs.

The reds play Spurs at the weekend at Anfield, and Tottenham also have to face Man Utd tomorrow night.

Teams are out

Jordan Henderson leads Liverpool out for the first time in 2018.

A total of 6 changes from LFC's FA Cup defeat at the weekend, but just 3 changes compared with our last Premier League game against Swansea.

KICK OFF

We're underway at the Kirklees Stadium.

Come on redmen!

20:02 UK

Early tactic for Huddersfield seems to get plenty of men behind the ball.

Looks like a flat back 5, plenty of players tucked into their own third for the Terriers.

20:04 UK

Firmino with the first chance of the game.  Firmino with the original good pass to Mane, but Sadio's initial control was poor.

The Brazilian followed up with a shot but it had no real power.

20:09 UK

Now it's Huddersfield with the ball, showing a bit of intent on getting themselves forward.

They've got Laurent Depoitre central and it looks like his job is to get his head on the ball and knock it on to the players either side of him.

20:16 UK

16' Not scintillating for Liverpool so far.  Wagner's men are doing a little bit of gegenpressing themselves.

Their crowd sense there may be something in this for them tonight.  Sadio Mane's touch hasn't been great so far for the reds.

20:17 UK

17' Good save by Karius - reflex save after a ball comes right across the area and then Depoitre fires in the snapshot.

20:21 UK

Emre Can and Firmino combine to outmuscle the ball back from Zanka.

Lossl has definitely been the more involved of the keepers and now the reds win a corner.

Salah sends it in but Lossl comes out to punch it clear.

20:23 UK

24' Emre Can curls one at the keeper from outside the area, but the keeper keeps it out and Huddersfield get it as far as the half way line.

A period of pressure here from Liverpool who are camped inside their opponents half.

20:26 UK
GOAL!!

26' Well well EMRE CAN absolutely smashes in a right footed shot from outside the area thanks in part to a little deflection that affected the balls speed, more than its direction.

1-0 to Liverpool

20:33 UK

Chris Lowe has his hands wrapped around Mo Salah for a good 5 seconds as the Egyptian tries to pull away but somehow doesn't get a yellow card.

Friendly football from referee Kevin Friend.

20:35 UK

10 minutes until half time, Liverpool leading 1-0.  But the reds have conceded in each of the last 6 games so that lead may not be enough.

Huddersfield haven't come out guns blazing after our opening goal - the reds still probing, trying to draw Huddersfield out to create more space.

20:40 UK

Dangerous free kick for Huddersfield at the edge of the box....

.. but it's bent wide of the goal.

20:46 UK
GOAL!!!

45+1  Absolute class from Roberto Firmino - from the narrowest of angles - he shapes to pass before smashing it in to the net.

In off the past as well.

2-0.

20:50 UK
HALF TIME

Not vintage from Liverpool - but a deserved lead and 2 goals coming at important periods.

Emre Can's thunderbolt had arrived shortly after Liverpool had been trying carefully to unpick the Huddersfield defence.  Can had different ideas and his thunderbolt shot took a deflection that took some of the pace out of the shot and helped beat the keeper.

And then just before half time Bobby Firmino steps up with another little bit of clever play to fool the keeper into expecting the pass.  Drills the ball inside the goalkeeper from 6 yards.

2-0.

21:01 UK
Fairly dominant then

89% pass completion rate for the reds so far tonight

21:02 UK
Second half underway

We're back at it.  Huddersfield straight at it from the kick off - Liverpool surely have to complete the mission now.

21:11 UK

54' If Liverpool want to leapfrog Chelsea on goal difference then they will have to win by 4 goals.

And a quick move from the reds releases Sadio Mane in the area but his header is straight at the keeper - good cross by Emre Can.

21:15 UK
Shot

58' Period of LFC passing excellence comes to an end when Milner catches a sight of goal.  He drills a shot from the edge of the area that forces Lossl to tip over. Corner sent in but defender clears it with his head.

Liverpool are in control here.  It's hard to see even the reds letting this get away from them.

21:21 UK
Huddersfield make a change

63' They've made a change.  Colin Quaner on for Steve Mounie.  It's been almost complete control for Liverpool in this second half - Huddersfield have been in the reds half on maybe two occasions.

Ironic cheers from the home fans when they had the ball in their own half - briefly.

21:25 UK
And another chance for Sadio

69' Same ball over by Emre Can - Mane in the same position beating the last defender but this time his header is wide.

He could have had a brace in this second half.

21:29 UK
Penalty appeal for Huddersfield

Substitution for Huddersfield has added a bit of spice to the game and Huddersfield think they have a shout for a penalty, but it's not a penalty - looked a bit of a dive from Quaner.

21:30 UK

73' And now a chance for Mo Salah at the other end - he tries to place it in with his left foot when he might have been better using his other foot.

The keeper had already been taken out of the equation.

21:33 UK

Penalty to Liverpool

21:35 UK
GOAL!!!

77' Mo Salah scores from the penalty spot and the reds are 3-0 up.

He fires it low, but the keeper has gone the wrong way.

21:39 UK
Double sub

83' Mo Salah and Jordan Henderson head off - on comes Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Gini Wijnaldum.

21:44 UK

Looks like the reds are going to make one more change here.

Just 2 minutes to go.

21:46 UK
Firmino off

89 - Bobby Firmino heads off a minute before time and on comes Dominic Solanke.
