Klopp gives a history lesson as he warns Liverpool not to treat Maribor lightly

Jurgen Klopp brushed off the 7-0 away win against Maribor as he prepares to face the side at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Liverpool are currently top of the group after a slow start and will be hoping to extend their advantage as they welcome the Slovenian side to Anfield.

But the reds boss is wary that the reds should not expect another whitewash.

He recalled the 'Miracle of Bern'.  The then West Germany were hammered 8-3 by Hungary in the group stages before going on to beat them in the World Cup final 3-2 just a fortnight later.

“I am from Germany so I know in 1954 we lost against Hungary in the group stage really clear and then we won the World Cup final.

“Nobody would have expected that. That’s football. That is how I learned it pretty early in my life. It’s always possible.”

The reds stormed into a 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes away at Maribor - but Klopp suggests that that performance was the exception rather than the rule.

“We have to use the little advantage of being the home team, using the crowd, being spot on again.

“We did so well in Maribor and that was the reason for the result – not the quality of the opponent.

“At the end it looked like a big difference but it was only because of our start. We have to do that again.

“Being there from the first second should be easy to understand for the boys because we lost points in the first two games of the group.

“Everybody is close together. Nobody knows how the other game will go so we need to use this opportunity for us to win our home game and be in a better position.”

Maribor have enjoyed some great results since that last Liverpool game and have now got back level on points at the top their league.

The reds kick off at 7:45pm later today.
