Liverpool finally got their first away win in the Champions League proper since the days of Rafa Benitez and what a win it was.

It was the reds biggest ever away win in any European competition with an the record breaking 6th goal coming from substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.  In the dying minutes of the game Alexander Arnold made it a whopping 7-0.

The reds were effervescent from the outset in their citrus third strip in this game on the Slovenian/Austrian border.

James Milner came in to replace a 'rested' Jordan Henderson and had a terrific game for the reds.

Loris Karius, the Champions League keeper, recorded a safe clean sheet - although he was possibly busier than Simon Mignolet against Man Utd at the weekend.

Roberto Firmino opened the scoring with a simple goal after just 4 minutes to send the reds on their way.  It was excellent work from Mo Salah who pressed the ball in midfield then ran into the area before setting up Bobby for the tap in.

The second goal for the reds was held up by Firmino - Salah found Milner who crossed in for Coutinho to drill in the half-volley.

Salah got the third - a deserved goal - when he put the ball over the Maribor keeper from inside the area.  He'd missed a few one on ones in recent weeks but this time he was up to the job.

Alberto Moreno had another excellent night and he provided the cross in front of the goal for Firmino and Salah to both attempt the finish.  Salah looked like he got the final touch. 4-0.

On to the second half - and the reds were at it again.  A corner straight away but this time Moreno's finish went narrowly wide of the goal.

Coutinho tested the goalkeeper with a free kick in front of goal, but from another free kick Coutinho found the head of Firmino who grabbed his second of the game.

Time to rest some players.  Off went Firmino, Salah, Coutinho - on came Sturridge, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Solanke.

And it was a debut goal from Oxlade-Chamberlain that gave the reds their 6th.  (Liverpool's previous best European away win was 5-0).

The clock turned to 90 minutes - and Alexander-Arnold added a 7th to cap a fine evening for the reds.

Attention turns to the weekend's game away at Spurs in the Premier League, a difficult trip, but the reds have put themselves at the top of their Champions League group.

  1. Superb stuff. Knew a result like that was coming – and I knew that result in Moscow was half-decent. Ask Sevilla if they would have taken a 1-1 in Russia!
