The overnight news, out of nowhere, was that the reds are at an advanced stage in a deal for FC Augsburg's 30 year old defender Ragnar Klavan.
Recent achilles injuries to Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez, slight concerns over Joel Matip and the departures of Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel are believed to have influenced the move.
Tiago Ilori will also be involved in the Olympics football tournament.
Steven Caulker had to be drafted in on loan last winter after the reds suffered an injury crisis in central defence. He too has now left the club.
Klavan, an Estonian international, is a tough tackling centre-back who can also fill in at left back - and will be well known to Klopp from his time in the Bundesliga.
He has been a permanent fixture in the Augsburg side since his arrival 4 years ago. He has also collected over 100 caps for his country for whom he is the captain.
Prior to his move to the Bundesliga he spent 8 seasons in the Dutch top division with spells at both Heracles Almelo and AZ Alkmaar. He has clocked up over 400 senior club appearances with a goal haul of 20.
Everton were linked with the defender last year but he turned down the move.
The reds fly out to the US later this week - and the reds England and Belgian contingent return to the club on Thursday. Klavan, likely, could be there before them.
Update: The Echo reports that Klavan is arriving on Merseyside tonight with a medical due to take place tomorrow.
Seems to be a good bit of business. I think he can prove good, experienced cover without the high wage bill that both Kolo and Martin were carrying. Nice work I think.
