Liverpool's Luis Suarez will undergo surgery after suffering an injury whilst training with Uruguay.
The reports from the media in his home country suggest the player will undergo keyhole surgery in the next few hours.
The Footballer of the Year suffered a knee injury during training. An MRI scan completed a couple of hours ago revealed meniscus damage that will require an operation. Normally recovery time is 2-4 weeks, which means the player faces a challenge to train before the World Cup.
An official from the Uruguayan FA said:
‘It was all unexpected. The latest information is that we are deciding what to do, but there are increased possibilities (of undergoing surgery).
'I can’t tell you anything more. The AUF (Uruguay FA) will announce it officially on Thursday morning.’
Uruguay face their World Cup opener on June 14th and take on England on the 19th, in four weeks time.
Recovery times can vary. Fernando Torres required 7 weeks of recuperation ahead of the 2010 World Cup and many suggest he was never the same after, however John Terry needed only 2 weeks to get over his similar operation back in 2012.
Liverpool Football Club have not commented so far.
