Luis Suarez Profile

Luis Suarez signed for Liverpool a week after his 24th birthday on the last day of January 2011.

After a week long pursuit, the reds eventually announced an agreed fee of €26.5M (£22.8M) hours before Fernando Torres handed in a transfer request.

The Uruguayan began his career with Nacional, before moving to Groningen in the Netherlands in 2006 for around £500,000 at the age of 19. After an impressive first season he was signed by Ajax in the summer of 2007 for around £5.8M.

At the end of his first season there he had scored 20 times in 40 appearances.

In 2009-10 he scored 4 goals in a game on two occasions. He ended the season as top scorer with 35 league goals (49 goals in all competitions) and was named Dutch Footballer of the Year.

Before his arrival at Anfield, he had scored 12 times in 24 appearances, in the first half of the season for Ajax.

His first appearance in a Liverpool shirt came in the 63rd minute of the home Premier League game against Stoke City on the night of the 2nd February 2011.  With international clearance taking some time, he had not had the opportunity to train with his team-mates.  The reds were already leading 1-0 up, but 16 minutes in to his arrival he scored his debut goal.

His new £35M strike partner, Andy Carroll (out through minor injury), was watching on from the sidelines.

He was officially unveiled to the media alongside Carroll the following day.
